Congratulations to all the JEMS Games participants, finalists and Gold, Silver and Bronze winners. You treated us to classic examples of why we all love EMS because of the challenges we re confronted with and asked to solve in seconds rather than minutes.
The JEMS Games once again showed that EMS requires a lot more than rote memorization or rapid, garbled assessment mnemonics rattled off to please a few judges rather than comfort a patient or their nearby family members.
EMS, and the JEMS Games, is all about people: the people we are called on to care for and the people who must manage their challenging conditions. The audiences at this year s JEMS Games weren t disappointed. They were treated to a great showing of unique personalities on each team, some similar in approach and assessment skills, but no two competitors alike. The audiences cheered for the innovative approaches to patient packaging and movement and offered muffled gasps when team members tried to take on too much weight by themselves and stumbled while dragging a 175-pound manikin to safety.
In the end, the teams that made the fewest mistakes and operated in the most accurate and efficient manner advanced to the finals. Special thanks to Baltimore City Fire Department, Maryland State Police, founding sponsor Laerdal Medical and their team of simulation experts, the judges, victims and stage crew.
We re gearing up for the 2007 games already and announced that the winner of the 2007 JEMS Games will be sent to a similar competition that will be offered by the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals, in conjunction with JEMS, on the Gold Coast of Australia in September 2007. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting educational opportunity and clinical competition Down Under.
