SAN DIEGO-- The city of San Diego's ambulance provider is using something it calls the "American Chariot" to respond to emergencies at San Diego Chargers games and other Qualcomm Stadium events.
The motorized single-passenger scooter is designed to move quickly through congested areas, officials with San Diego Medical Services Enterprise said. Two Chariots, driven by EMTs and paramedics, are being used. Both made their debut at the Chargers first home game this month.
The scooters are intended to quickly deliver emergency medical care personnel to ill or injured people in crowded areas, as opposed to maneuvering a full-size ambulance through crowds. An ambulance will still be dispatched, officials with San Diego Medical Services said, but the Chariot team will arrive early to begin treatment.
San Diego Medical Services also provides coverage for dozens of special events in San Diego County, where the Chariots will be used.
