Paramedic admits he possessed child porn

A former Vinton paramedic pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges of possessing child pornography.

Dennis Vincent Thompson, 33, faces a preliminary sentence recommendation of 63 to 78 months in prison, plus the loss of computers found during an October search of his home. His sentencing is set for Nov. 13.

Court documents said a federal investigation of a child porn Web site called illegal.CP, which was being operated from New Jersey, discovered Thompson among the site's subscribers.

According to court filings, the Web site warned viewers that its contents violated the law and gave advice on how to deny making purchases from the site if credit cards were traced.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Pflegar said Thompson's computers contained more than 150 but fewer than 300 pornographic images of children, including some of children younger than age 12 and of children engaged in sexual acts with adults.

Pflegar said there was no indication Thompson ever harmed a child himself.

U.S. District Judge Glen Conrad said he would allow Thompson to remain free on a $25,000 bond pending his sentencing, but said Thompson is not allowed to access the Internet and could not have contact with children under age 18 or live in a home with either children or computers.

Thompson's attorney, Robert Rid, said Thompson had resigned his position with the Vinton First Aid Crew.
