OXFORD-- Two new emergency response vehicles will be purchased under a $2.1 million financial pact with General Electric Energy Financial Services and should be ready for use by next year, officials said Wednesday.
The bidding process was opened Tuesday after the Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to accept bids for a new ladder truck for the town's Fire Department and a new ambulance for the Oxford Ambulance Association.
The bids are due back on Oct. 22, according to First Selectman August Palmer III.
"Those are critical things," Palmer said.
Last week, the town received $2.1 million from General Electric Energy Financial Services, in advance of the company's plans to build a power plant in the town's industrial area. As part of its agreement, the town must use $900,000 to purchase a ladder truck, one that Palmer said is able to reach taller buildings like the new Oxford High School. The town has allocated $160,000 toward purchasing a new ambulance for the Oxford Ambulance Association in the proposed $34.77 million budget that will be voted on by residents on Oct. 18. Palmer said Wednesday that the town would find another way to purchase the ambulance if the budget fails. A new ambulance would replace an older vehicle that has more than 100,000 miles on it.
"The old one is on its last legs," Palmer said. "The health, safety and welfare of the town is paramount. We've got to get that moving."
