Moments after bringing a patient to the Milford Regional Medical Center Friday, two Norfolk firefighter-paramedics found themselves treating patients from a five-car pile-up that included their ambulance.

Firefighter-paramedics Mark Haigh and David Russo treated four of the seven people injured in the 12:30 p.m. crash - which included two rollovers - outside the hospital, Norfolk Fire Chief Coleman Bushnell said.

Haigh and Russo were leaving the hospital on Prospect Street after transporting a patient who had breathing problems, Bushnell said.

The Norfolk ambulance was rear-ended, but not damaged, Bushnell said. The firefighter-paramedics escaped injury.

"They felt the impact." Bushnell said. "They looked in their rear-view mirror and saw two rollovers and another vehicle into a pole," he continued.

The men treated one patient who was in respiratory arrest and another with multiple leg fractures, Bushnell said.

Milfordfirefighters extricated the victims.

Emergency personnel from the hospital and from the Hopedale fire department were also on scene.

"Based upon the report submitted by Haigh and Russo, their actions saved lives today," Bushnell said.
