Paramedics On Hand for NASCAR Race

EXPRESS-TIMES STAFF | | Sunday, August 2, 2009

A group of Lehigh Valley residents will be sitting 30 feet from the track as cars whiz by at this weekend's Pennsylvania 500.

Don Shambo Jr., a Northampton resident, will be among them. However, he's not just there to watch. Shambo is a paramedic who'll help out in the event of a crash or some other emergency. The 52-year-old will be dressed in a fire-resistant safety uniform much like the one worn by NASCAR drivers and fitted with a headset to keep him apprised of what's happening on the track.

"When those cars come by, not only do you hear it, I mean, you can feel it, it's so loud," Shambo said. "I enjoy being able to be out there. It's not something everybody gets a chance to do."
