TAMPA, FL -- The driver of a truck that collided with an ambulance has died, according to the Tampa Police Department.

Busch Boulevard was jammed with emergency vehicles after an American Medical Response ambulance was involved in a crash with a pickup truck Monday night.

Traffic investigators say the driver of the ambulance unit was heading east on Busch Boulevard when he realized traffic was stopped in front of him. He tried to stop but could not in time and drove over the double yellow lines in the westbound lanes.

The ambulance collided with a 2001 Ford truck driven by 54-year-old Gerold Hager.

Hager was trapped inside the pickup and had to be rescued. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with serious injuries, where he later died.

The 28-year-old ambulance driver was cited for the accident. Both he and his and passenger were not seriously hurt.

Police are continuing their investigation of the incident.
