PASADENA, Calif. -- One cat was killed and two others were resuscitated by paramedics Thursday after a fire caused about $100,000 worth of damage to a home, officials said.

Three additional cats were reported missing after the fire, which occurred about 6:45 p.m. at a single-story house in the 700 block of East Howard Street, Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

No human injuries were reported.

The incident was the first time the Pasadena Fire Department was able to make use of special masks designed to allow paramedics to give rescue breathing to animals such as dogs, cats and even rodents, Derderian said.

The Humane Society gave the devices to the Pasadena Fire Department last year and trained Pasadena personnel to use them, Derderian said.

The paramedics involved in the feline rescue were "proud of the fact that they were able to revive the two cats," she said.

The sole resident of the home, a woman who was not home when the fire started, searched for her three lost cats late Thursday as neighbors consoled her.

Humane Society officials were on scene to examine the surviving cats, as well as help look for the missing ones, Derderian said.

The fire started in the kitchen of the single-story home, she said, however a cause remained under investigation.

The house would likely be uninhabitable for several days, Derderian added. The resident was able to find another place to stay in the meantime.
