At some point the medical community realized that the two rescuer technique of bag valve mask ventilation was more beneficial for patients that were difficult to ventilate. The same holds true for patients that are difficult to intubate. Certain patients have always presented a more difficult intubation, none more than the obese patient. To address the difficulty in intubating the obese patient there have been numerous techniques developed for two rescuer intubation. All have used a standard laryngoscope and all have been limited by the standard laryngoscopes design. The Bell Laryngoscope (also known as the R-3) is the first laryngoscope designed specifically for use with a two rescuer technique. This new laryngoscope design has led to new and more effective techniques for the two rescuer intubation.
