22 Injured in Greyhound Bus Crash with Semi in Michigan

CHARLESTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say woman who was critically injured when a Chicago-bound Greyhound bus hit the back of a semi-truck in southwestern Michigan is showing improvement.

In all, authorities say 22 people were injured in the Thursday morning crash on westbound Interstate 94 in Kalamazoo County's Charleston Township. Most of the injuries were described as minor.

The sheriff's department says 65-year-old Cecillia Cheng of Darien, Ill., was a front-seat passenger on the bus. She was hospitalized in stable condition Friday after earlier being in critical condition.

The 64-year-old bus driver was hospitalized after the crash. The bus with 48 passengers was traveling from Toronto.

Authorities say it appears the truck was entering I-94 about 120 miles west of Detroit when it was hit.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Editor's Note: Aaron Mueller, public safety reporter for the Kalamazoo Gazette and MLive.com, was among the first to report on this incident. Below is Mueller's report from the scene, when the injury count was 11.

GALESBURG, Mich. — Eleven people, including the driver, on a Greyhound bus headed to Chicago from Toronto were injured Thursday morning when the bus rear-ended a semi truck in Kalamazoo County, authorities said.

The driver is still trapped in the bus. His injuries are believed to be minor but authorities won't know for sure until he is extricated, Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller said.

Ten passengers were taken to Kalamazoo hospitals, all with minor injuries, Fuller said.

The crash occurred on westbound I-94 near the 88 mile-marker east of Kalamazoo just before 10:30 a.m.

A Kalamazoo Metro Transit bus was brought to the scene to retrieve the remaining passengers. They are being taken to the transportation center in downtown Kalamazoo where a Greyhound bus will pick them up and take them to Chicago, Greyhound spokeswoman Jen Biddinger said.

Crews will be on the scene investigating the crash for at least three more hours, the sheriff said.
