JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — More than a dozen firefighters have been hospitalized after being overcome by the heat battling a blaze that has burned at least three homes in Jersey City.

The cause has not yet been determined.

Neighbor Trina Bullock says there were flames and smoke all around, and then she heard two or three explosions.

She says, "it was black smoke, a boom and the house just went up again."

Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill says more than a dozen firefighters were taken to a hospital. More were treated on the scene. One of those hospitalized had an ankle injury.

The fire was reported around 12:30 p.m. Friday as temperatures in the region reached the high 90s.
