18-Month-Old Revived after Falling in Tennessee Pool

KNOXVILLE - Authorities are investigating after an 18-month-old boy nearly drowned in the backyard pool of a Northwest Knoxville residence Tuesday evening.

The incident was reported shortly before 6 p.m. at a residence on the 1600 block of Sundrop Drive, according to an E-911 operator.

The homeowner, who declined to give his name, said a friend had permission to use the in-ground pool while he and his wife were away at work. The friend apparently brought some other friends, as well as several children along. The victim fell into the pool without a flotation device, he said.

An adult in the party pulled the child from the water and initiated CPR.

The boy was breathing when Knoxville Fire Department and Rural/Metro ambulance crews arrived, KFD Capt. D.J. Corcoran said. A suction device was used to pull some remaining fluid from the child's lungs, he said.

The boy was transported by ambulance to East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

A Knoxville Police Department investigator, as well as a state Department of Children's Services official, also responded to the scene.

More details as they develop online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.
