Rural/Metro Reduces Administrative Workforce in Company-wide Realignment

A recent realignment of nationwide field operations at Rural/Metro Corporation has led to the consolation of four zones into three. As a result of the realignment, 90 Rural/Metro administrative and corporate employees were laid off April 16. The cuts represent less than 1% of the company’s nearly 10,000 employees throughout 21 states. The action didn't impact front-line EMS or fire protection personnel.

In a memo to all employees, Rural/Metro President and CEO Michael DiMino said the company was “making changes in our Field Zone and Corporate structure that enables the organization to improve operational and financial performance in the upcoming fiscal year and beyond.” According to Rural Metro executives, realignment in the corporate office are designed to improved labor efficiencies and enhancements in the quality billing and collection processes.

The changes will support field operations and better position the company to respond to changes brought about by the Affordable Healthcare Act, says DiMino,  who told employees that Rural/Metro must do everything it can to increase the value of its business, improve processes and “deliver the outstanding excellence customers have come to expect from Rural/Metro.”

Effective April 16, John Karolzak, will serve as zone vice president for the newly-combined South/Southwest Zone; Rich Doggett will lead the East Zone and Specialty Fire; and John Wilson, who served as chief operating officer of the Southwest Zone, was promoted to zone vice president for the West Zone. Senior Vice President Mark Lashley will consolidate and focus the company’s efforts on labor utilization.

While changes are underway at Rural/Metro to prepare for the changes and challenges expected to be placed on the ambulance and hospital industry by healthcare reform, Falck Ambulance recently acquired Verihealth Inc., a private company that provides transport, dispatch and training throughout California and the western United States. It operates a high-tech call center that facilitates what they pledge to patients is “safe, reliable and efficient care and transportation”. The company is also involved in teaching PALS, BLS and ACLS classes.

Falck announced the purchase on their Facebook page April 5.
