Fire Causes Evacuation in Winnipeg Children’s Hospital

WINNIPEG - More than 100 young patients, some of them seriously ill, had to be moved when black smoke started pouring from the Children’s Hospital at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre.

A total of 102 patients were relocated to other parts of the complex when the fire broke out late Monday evening in an area of the hospital that is under construction.

Some of the children were in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, but none of them was hurt.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries, and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

There was some smoke and water damage, but staff started moving patients back in overnight.

Elective surgeries at Children's have been cancelled for the day, but all other appointments are still scheduled. (CJOB)
