Department of Emergency Medicine Announces the Initiation of the First National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Program in the Philippines

The George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates (GW-MFA) Department of Emergency Medicine, in collaboration with the Emergency Education Institute International and the Construction Manpower Development Foundation (CMDF) of Manila, is pleased to announce the initiation of the first National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) program in the Philippines.

In July 2011, The GW-MFA Department of Emergency Medicine initiated its inaugural class of 27 students at the Construction Manpower Development Foundation facility in Cavite, a province of the Philippines located in the Calabarzon region in Luzon. “With this class, we are introducing to the Philippines the western national registry standard for EMT-Basics.” said William Fritz, Program Manager, GW-MFA Department of Emergency Medicine. “These highly trained students will not only be the first NREMTs in the Philippines but will also be a critical component to improving access to emergency health care throughout the country.”

By September 30th, the GW-MFA Department of Emergency Medicine will graduate three additional cohorts, bringing the total of Philippine NREMT graduates to 89. Equivalent to US NREMT programs, the training model design provides a base of general medical and emergency knowledge and skills from which EMTs can differentiate and specialize according to the needs of the community. During the intensive 30 day program students are also certified in CPR using the American Heart Association standards – another first for the region.
