IAEMSClogo-0

The International Association of EMS Chiefs (IAEMSC) has announced the agenda for their 2011 EMS Leadership Summit which will be held in Washington, DC, October 28-31, 2011.

Important topics that will be covered include:

• Political engagement and advocacy
• HSPD-8: National preparedness policy part II
• EMS leadership networking
• Graduate education opportunities for EMS leaders
• Health care reform and EMS, the early years
• EMS Operations in austere times
• Evolving ambulance standards
• Federal EMS leadership, where are we now?
• Exhibit hall

The 2011 Summit will feature a perspective of EMS advocacy “from the other side of the table.”  Colorado State Senator John Morse, a former Denver paramedic and current Senate Majority Leader, and United States Senator Chris Coons, a former County Council President and County Executive, will provide their perspective on how EMS as a profession is currently perceived by their colleagues and how EMS leaders can improve the effectiveness of their advocacy.

The 2011 IAEMSC Summit will also host a viewing of the documentary movie FIRESTORM that was produced by Talking Eyes Media.  The viewing will be followed by a discussion with Julie Winokur, the director of the film.
FIRESTORM follows LAFD’s Station 65, located in South Los Angeles, a community that is desperate for medical attention.  Eleven hospitals have closed in the last 5 years, and the wait time in some ER’s is as long as 48 hours.  The film surveys doctors, nurses, policy makers and the paramedics who offer solutions ranging from expanding access to primary care, to educating the public about taking responsibility for their health care.  In communities across the country, emergency medical care is being pushed to the brink.  FIRESTORM shows that the consequences can be deadly.

Talking Eyes Media is also working to support the recommendation of the IAEMSC and EMSLA white paper that was submitted to the White House recommending the designation of a lead federal agency for EMS.  They have added an opportunity for visitors on their web site:  http://talkingeyesmedia.org/firestorm to endorse the paper and its recommendation.

The IAEMSC Leadership Summit is intended for middle and senior leaders in EMS organizations and will include attendees from across the United States as well as International EMS representatives.
