Worker Falls 5 Stories, Lives

NEW YORK -- A contractor survived a five-story fall from the roof of a Jericho office building where he was working, police said.

The unidentified worker was conscious and alert when police arrived, Sgt. Chet Clark of Nassau police said.

The man was taken by ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow. A hospital spokeswoman said he was expected to be admitted for treatment.

The worker was part of a crew making repairs on the roof of a Cablevision building at 200 Jericho Quadrangle, part of an office complex off Jericho Turnpike.

The worker lost his balance and fell at 2:30 p.m., Clark said. He landed in a landscaped area covered with gravel.

Security guards and Cablevision employees who are volunteer emergency medical technicians rushed to the man's aid, said a witness, who asked not to be identified because he works in the building.

"He was just lying there," the witness said. "Security got there right away and took care of him. He was screaming. My co-workers that went down there said his face was bloody, but they said he was able to move one of his arms."

In a statement, Cablevision said the worker was employed by an independent contractor.

"We are conducting an investigation into the matter and have no further comment," the Cablevision statement said. Cablevision is Newsday's parent company.

Officials at the company performing the roof repairs, Roof Services in Deer Park, could not be reached for comment.
