First Responders to Shooting Recall Helping Victims

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- As they entered the parking lot of the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, the emergency personnel braced themselves for the scene awaiting them after the shotgun rampage.

"It was one of the worst in my 25 years because of everything involved, the church, the kids, the critically injured and because it came to Knoxville," said Knoxville Fire Department Capt. Mike Pickett, with station 12 on Old Kingston Pike.

Pickett, a paramedic, and Master Firefighter Dennis Hinkle, an emergency medical technician, were two of the first emergency care providers on the scene. They were joined by Senior Firefighter Rusty Jenkins.
