San Mateo County Sheriffs to Receive Donation of 15 Defibrillators

The Sequoia Healthcare District will donate 15 automated external defibrillators to the San Mateo County (Calif.) Sheriff s Office in a ceremony Tuesday at the Redwood City Hall of Justice.

Sheriff Greg Munks, who will be accepting the devices, said they are necessary in public places.

The ability to get a defibrillator as fast as possible to the scene of someone in sudden cardiac arrest can mean the difference between life and death, Munks said.

All sheriff s deputies are trained in CPR and the use of a defibrillator. The new machines will be placed in patrol vehicles.

Approximately 350,000 people, including 7,500 children, die each year of sudden cardiac arrest outside a hospital setting, according to authorities.

This is why it s critical to get AEDs beyond the hospital environment, said Stephanie Scott, CEO of the Sequoia Healthcare District.

The San Mateo County Emergency Medical Services Agency encourages the placement of AEDs in shopping centers, office buildings, golf courses, movie theaters, community centers, and school campuses.
