Know Your Motor Vehicle Laws

Every vehicle on the roadway should follow its respective rules of the road. This includes emergency vehicles. Certain vehicles such as emergency vehicles are often granted special exemptions (privileges) during emergency response. Understanding the intent of these exemptions (privileges) is crucial to a safe response. ESO leadership should incorporate these exemptions along with the understanding of the law of due regard into their respective policies. Every person in the ESO should be trained on the laws and their respective ESO policies. When developing policy, consider the following:

  1. Obtain copies of your state and local statutes, county and city ordinances and applicable regulations.
  2. Develop examples that are appropriate for your ESO. Don't leave any doubt as to what is right or wrong.
  3. Have an attorney review your policies and/or assist you with preparing the examples for your ESO.
