LOS ANGELES -- Six people were injured Monday when a Los Angeles Fire Department ambulance transporting a critically ill patient to a hospital collided head-on with another vehicle in Pacific Palisades, a department spokesman said.

The crash occurred just after midnight at Pacific Coast Highway and Temescal Canyon Road, said Fire Department Capt. Ron Myers.

The patient in the ambulance was being taken to a hospital in critical condition for a medical complaint, Myers said, adding that following the accident the patient was treated in an emergency room.

The female driver of the vehicle that collided with the ambulance suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to a hospital, Myers said.

The four firefighters in the ambulance suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a hospital for evaluation, he said.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, Myers said. It was not immediately reported if the ambulance had its lights and siren on at the time of the collision.
