Patient, Crew OK After Rockingham Ambulance Wrecks

| Friday, February 13, 2009

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- A Rockingham County EMS unit taking a patient to a nursing center overturned on U.S. 158 Wednesday afternoon.

The accident was reported at 2:45 p.m. Gerald Archer, an EMT, was driving the ambulance, Trooper G.R. Strader said.

Archer was traveling east on U.S. 158, taking a patient to Yanceyville, Strader said. Archer said he glanced down at some paperwork. When he looked up, he realized he had drifted left of the center line, Strader said. Archer was unable to regain control of the ambulance and it ran off the shoulder and hit a tree, Strader said.

The patient, Dorothy Perkins, was taken back to Annie Penn Hospital for evaluation. Neither Archer nor the attendant onboard the ambulance, David Eberle, was injured.
