Pod squads?

CNN reports on pod-based modular ambulances

Linnie Rawlinson | | Monday, July 2, 2007

Pod systems for ambulances may increase the number of cases paramedics can handle and reduce the number of transports, as reported by CNN.com.

British medical researchers are considering a shift toward providing more emergency care in the field rather than in hospitals. As part of this shift, researchers are auditing current treatment and transport vehicles and studying new types of vehicles that would be tailored to the level of emergency. For instance, a unit with a diagnostic pod or a minor surgery pod could be dispatched, depending on the nature of the call. Within each unit, a portable pod is envisioned that includes appropriate equipment to be carried into the home.

The aim of the research is to study the logistics of patient care and how to optimize care rendered in the field, including telemedicine and at-home monitoring, which could reduce a patient's overall medical costs.
