Flair Replacement

Creating a scene that's safe for you and your crew is always a No. 1 priority. For decades, the incendiary flare has been a mainstay in rescue work to help establish safe areas at an accident scene. They work well, but their drawbacks include dangerous flames, extra smoke on a scene, difficulty in wet weather and environmental concerns. PF-200 Safety Lights from PowerFlare are a lightweight beacon that has 16 LEDs to give off 360 degrees of light. Ten different selectable light patterns make them more visible than traditional flairs. You can choose from eight LED color choices and six outer shell colors. Each beacon runs on a replaceable CR-123 lithium battery. Because they're waterproof, they can be used safely at scenes where fuel or gas spills are present. The PF-200R, a rechargeable version of the PowerFlare, is also available.

Vehicle USB Charging Ports

A growing problem in EMS is how to charge all the gadgets and gizmos modern technology has blessed us with to make our jobs easier and more efficient. To put it simply, we don’t have enough power outlets in our ambulance. The USB Dual Port Model #091-219 from Kussmaul Electronics has two USB charging ports to charge both an iPhone and iPad (for example) at the same time and free other valuable outlets in your ambulance. The port installs easily, is designed to fit into a standard 1.45" x 0.83" panel cutout, and can be connected to the 12-volt ignition switch or directly to the vehicle battery. The port comes with a built-in red LED indicator power light. It’s also reverse polarity protected. VITALS

Innovative Child Restraint System

Standard ambulance stretchers work well to restrain an adult if the ambulance is involved in a motor vehicle crash, but studies have shown children don’t fare as well in a crash when restrained using standard stretcher restraint belts. In fact, the results could be fatal. Quantum EMS has created the Ambulance Child Restraint (ACR), a flexible, fully adjustable harness system compatible with any ambulance stretcher that allows for safe, secure transport of infants and children ranging in weight from 11–99 lbs. Harness straps are attached to the stretcher frame. The ACR is laid out on the stretcher and is buckled into the harness straps which are then tightened to ensure the patient is secure. It comes in three color-coded sizes and secures the patient at the shoulders, chest and pelvis. It’s made from breathable fabric, padded for patient comfort, meets infection control standards and is machine washable. The ACR system also comes in a compact bag for easy storage. VITALS
Bag size: 26" height, 8" depth, 12" width
Bag weight: 5 lbs.
Price: $579.00

Making Public Relations & Education Fun

Not everything we do in EMS involves rescue, trauma and medical. Public education and injury prevention are a big part of the industry, and many services have outstanding programs in these areas. However, if you find that your program has become a little stale, Andy the Ambulance from Robotronics may be the answer for you. Andy is a remote-controlled ambulance kids and adults love to interact with. Andy has working emergency lights and siren, headlight, tail lights, and can also wink, blink and move his eyes, as well as carry on a two-way conversation. Andy can move well in tight spots, making him ideal for classrooms, malls, health fairs, and just about any place your service chooses to educate or have a little fun. Both Andy and his remote control come with rechargeable batteries.

Time for an Airlift

n the November JEMS Buyer’s Guide, I wrote an article titled “Watching Your Back: New tools can help both you & the patient stay safe during transport,” discussing how new technology and equipment has made a big difference in our ability to safely lift and move patients, decrease the chance of back injury, and add to patient comfort and safety. The Camel Lift Chair from Mangar International is another example of how innovation has come to the forefront in patient lifting and handling. With its built-in backrest and internal ring construction, the Camel Lift Chair can quickly and easily raise a fall victim from a supine to a seated position. The lift is accomplished by inflating the Camel section by section using a portable lightweight compressor and handheld controller. The Camel is rated to handle patients weighing up to 700 lbs.
