W.V. Rescue Team to Get ATV Trailer

| Thursday, March 6, 2008

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Tyler Mountain Volunteer Fire Department's board of directors has approved the purchase of a specialized rescue trailer that can be pulled by All Terrain Vehicles.

Due to the growing number of ATV accidents in recent years, the Tyler Mountain VFD formed an ATV Rescue Team about three years ago.

Since then, the team has responded to about 12 calls, not just in the Cross Lanes area, but in other parts of Kanawha County, too.

The new trailer, which should arrive later in March, can be pulled by an ATV to carry accident victims and an emergency medical technician out of the woods more safely than strapping them to the side of a four-wheeler.

The cost of the trailer is just under $5,000 and will have a mounted stretcher and medical equipment. The manufacturer will send a representative to train the team on its use.

The ATV Rescue Team has 12 members, who are trained in ATV rescue, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Three team members are EMTs.

The team is also scheduled to attend an advanced map reading course and global positioning satellite technology training.
