EMS Helps Save Boy from Wash. Riptide Recovers

From the December 2011 Issue | Thursday, December 1, 2011

Surf rescue swimmer Doug Knutzen carries Charles “Dale” Ostrander to the shore of the Cranberry Road Beach approach Friday Aug. 5, in Long Beach, Wash. Rescue swimmers Eddie Mendez, left, and Will Green found Ostrander in the surf. According to an ABC “Good Morning America” report, the 12-year-old boy, who was under water for up to 20 minutes, had no pulse and wasn’t breathing when he was pulled out of the surf. Emergency responders performed CPR and started an IV. At the hospital, Ostrander was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent therapeutic hypothermia. Four days later, he opened his eyes, and he continues to recover. Check out “Resuscitation Roundtable: Five EMS experts offer their views on critical topic” on p. 38 for a high-level discussion on resuscitation and why EMS “owns” outcomes for patients with witnessed, out-of-hospital cardiac events.
