HemCon Bandage

Fran Hildwine, BS, NREMT-P, CCEMT-P | | Monday, May 12, 2008

Hemostatic bandages have been improving the survivability of patients with severe bleeding for several years. The HemCon Bandage, distributed in theU.S. by Cardinal Health, uses the non-exothermic chitosan matrix applied to a traditional bandage backing. You simply apply the HemCon bandage, and the chitosan becomes extremely adherent when in contact with blood. And by chemically attracting red blood cells, the tight seal also serves as an antibacterial barrier.
