Santa Barbara County Providers Assist in Dramatic Extrication

From the January 2008 Issue | Saturday, February 25, 2012

Santa Barbara County (Calif.) firefighters and paramedics, assisted by AMR ambulance personnel and the California Highway Patrol, prepare to move the last of three victims extricated from their car to a waiting medical helicopter. Firefighters worked for just under two hours to extricate three members of a family after the car they were riding in was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer on Highway 101 just south of Buellton and dragged under the trailer to a resting position hanging off of a bridge. The big-rig dropped off the bridge and exploded 100 feet below, killing the driver. The mother was freed from the vehicle after her two young children were extricated from the wreckage. A military convoy delayed by the highway incident offered the rescue crews a heavy-duty fork lift that played a key role in the stabilization of the car hanging
precariously off the bridge.
