Leg Gets Traction Splint after Fall

From the June 2010 Issue | Tuesday, June 1, 2010

A paramedic prepares to nasally administer fentanyl to a patient who fell in her backyard and exhibited an apparent left femur fracture. Montgomery County (Texas) Hospital District and Lake Conroe Fire Department crews responded, applying a traction splint and administering oxygen via a nasal cannula. They monitored the patient’s cardiac status and fully immobilized her with a C-collar and long spineboard prior to transport. They managed the patient’s pain with intranasal and IV fentanyl before transporting her to Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital, a Level 3 trauma center.
