Longtime South Carolina County EMS Director Dies

| Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Raymond Graham, who died Sunday at age 74, will be remembered for his leadership role in developing and then managing Charleston County's Emergency Medical Services system.

Graham was hired in 1976 to run the new Charleston County EMS Department. County Council had decided to create the service in 1973. He served as director of the department for more than 24 years, until his retirement in 2000. "He was a team builder, a true leader in his field and an advocate for patients and his staff," said EMS Director Don Lundy, who succeeded Graham.

Graham was honored with several awards, including the State EMS Director of the Year, Warren McBride Memorial Awards and the Charleston Medical Society EMS Award of Excellence.

"I firmly believe that Charleston has one of the premier EMS systems in the nation," Graham wrote in an article published in 2002, the same year the Lowcountry EMS Council named its new training building in his honor.
