WASHINGTON - Authorities have rescued a woman who apparently drove her car off the road and into the Anacostia River.
D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer says a Metropolitan Police officer and construction workers watched the car go off the road shortly before 2 p.m. on Thursday. The workers were able to reach the vehicle with a boat and broke a window with an oar, Piringer said.
The occupant of the vehicle, a woman believed to be in her mid-40s, surfaced shortly after. She is believed to be the only person in the vehicle. She was taken to a hospital in serious condition. It was not clear what caused her to drive off the road.
Authorities were still searching for the car, which sank.
