As a leader in the field of EMS training, Westchester Community College’s Department of Prehospital EMS takes the issue of CPR and advanced resuscitation seriously. Recent research indicates that the quality of CPR performed influences the survival outcome of patients.

In a move to address the need for improved CPR performance, we have purchased the Ambu SmartMan training system. Westchester Community College is the first community college on the east coast to move to evidence based training in the CPR and advanced airway educational component of our EMT and paramedic program. The same feedback is provided to the paramedic student as they learn the advanced airway skill of intubation.

The SmartMan system provides feedback as a student performs on the manikin, so they can adjust their skills and develop muscle memory of the correct procedures. It is important to recognize that changes in the new AHA guidelines 2010 require a huge number of people to modify how they have been performing this skill.

An accurate objective feedback system is essential to learning and to re-adjusting skills performance. SmartMan provides the student with a score immediately on completion of a skill. This is important to developing confidence that they can perform correctly.

The training system also provides the college with the ability to know how well students are performing. The college is also able to chart group performance over time so we can track our improvement.

Acquisition of SmartMan is an important step in our move in implementing our philosophy that paramedic graduates from our program should be competent to perform required skills.

For further information regarding the EMS Program, please call the Department Chariperson, Stephen Nardozzi (914) 606-6507.
