Paramedics on the way to an emergency call were involved in an emergency of their own in Putnam County when their ambulance was struck by an oncoming car.
Cecil Kimble, emergency medical services director for Putnam County, said the two paramedics were en route to an emergency call around 9:30 p.m. Monday when the accident occurred. The ambulance was traveling on W.Va. 34 approaching the Harper Road intersection when it was struck by an oncoming vehicle.
"Apparently, from what we can gather right now, the car crossed into their lane," Kimble said Tuesday.
The vehicle struck the front of the ambulance on the left side, causing heavy damage to both vehicles.
Putnam dispatchers said emergency crews responding to the scene had to cut the door and a portion of the roof off the car to free the female driver. Crews were able to pry the doors off the ambulance to pull the paramedics out.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved.
The driver of the car and both paramedics were transported to hospitals in Huntington for treatment. Kimble said he had been told the driver of the car was in serious condition.
The male paramedic who was driving the ambulance was released from the hospital Monday night with minor injuries. Kimble suspected he would return to work in a few days. The female paramedic who was in the passenger seat remained in the hospital Tuesday, Kimble said. He expected her to be off duty for several weeks recovering from her injuries.
Kimble said the ambulance the two were using was a spare. He didn't have an estimate on the damage Tuesday.
Hurricane Police are investigating.
