A 5-year-old girl was critically injured when she was accidently run over by backhoe in Weber County Saturday, police said.
The chid was at a gathering of family and friends at her home on the 3700 West block of 2200 North in Plain City when several children began asking for a ride on the front bucket of a backhoe, said Weber County Sheriff's Sgt. Chris Bitton. The owner agreed to the ride about 3 p.m. and three to four children about her age climbed on board. He raised the bucket and began slowly moving forward, but stopped when the children started to yell.
He looked down to see that the girl had been run over by the tire. Because the soil was soft, however, it compressed and she wasn't as badly injured as she might have been, Bitton said.
"The soil probably saved her life,'" Bitton said. The girl was conscious and breathing when ambulance crews rushed her to Ogden Regional Hospital, where she was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center. Though she remained in critical condition Saturday night, she was expected to recover.
Bitton did not expect any charges against the driver. It was "just an unfortunate accident, that was all."
