AN ambulance overturned on its way to an emergency call following a collision with a white van.

Three paramedics trapped inside the vehicle were cut free by firefighters.

The driver and passenger, both aged 49, were taken to Warrington Hospital.

A third member of the crew, a man, aged 31, rescued from the back of the ambulance, suffered minor whiplash injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

The accident happened at the junction of Halton Brow and Boston Avenue in Runcorn, at 7.40am today.

Steve White, crew manager at Runcorn Fire Station, said: "Two ambulance personnel were trapped inside the cab.

"It was on its side so they couldn't go through the door. They decided to remove the windscreen to gain direct access.

"One of the men was complaining of back injury, the other had leg injuries.

"They were able to give themselves an assessment."

The driver of the van, a 48-year-old Runcorn man, and his passenger did not need hospital treatment.

Two ambulances, three rapid response vehicles and a medical officer attended the crash.

Dave Kitchin, area head of service for North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, said: "The trust would like to pass on our thanks to the fire service for their swift action in extricating the staff involved.

"We are pleased that no-one has been seriously injured as a result of this accident.

"We will be fully co-operating with the police and their enquiries."

Roads were closed until lunch time for vehicles to be recovered.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
