VIRGINIA BEACH - A woman drove a blue Honda Civic into a medical building Wednesday morning because of a medical condition, authorities said.
Battalion Chief Tim Riley, a Fire Department spokesman, said the driver, who wasn't identified, mistook her gas pedal for her brake.
The driver and one person inside the building, in the 800 block of Independence Blvd., were injured. Riley said their injuries were considered non-life-threatening.
The crash was due to a medical condition, and no charges are pending , said Officer Margie Hobbs, a spokeswoman for the Police Department. The driver's age could not be determined.
The crash caused about $10,000 worth of damage, Riley said.
Lori Clayton, front-desk secretary at Independence Family Medicine, said she was typing a memo at her computer when she heard a boom. Two patients were in the lobby, she said.
She then saw a wall caving in and screamed for everyone to get out of the building.
"I thought it was like in a movie," she said.
Sue Goodman, a technician with The Eye Specialists, said she heard a boom and a lot of screaming when the crash occurred.
"We all came running out, and the car had just missed a person in a wheelchair," Goodman said.
Building co-owner Nina Taubman said The Eye Specialists and TotalCare for Women were closed until further notice. Independence Family Medicine is also closed until further notice.
