SAN DIEGO – Officials in San Diego unveiled a smartphone application that alerts people trained in CPR of a nearby cardiac arrest.

According to CBS8, San Diego city and county officials announced that the PulsePoint app will be available to its citizens on Monday. A county spokeswoman shared that people who know CPR will be able to sign up for the app that will alert them when a 911 call for a nearby cardiac arrest is received by one of five communication centers in the county.

The San Diego County region will be one the largest so far to begin using the PulsePoint app.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Supervisor Ron Roberts, Supervisor Bill Horn, San Diego County Fire Chiefs' Association President Dave Hanneman, and Tom Johnson, a sudden cardiac arrest survivor, are to hold a news conference in downtown San Diego later.
