Rural/Metro Purchases New Ambulances for Tennessee Fleet

Seven Braun ambulances to go in service in Knox County

ZACH DENNIS, Knoxville News-Sentinel | | Thursday, December 19, 2013

Rural/Metro has purchased seven new ambulances at a cost of nearly $1 million, and company officials said the new vehicles should keep area emergency care on the cutting edge.

The ambulances include state-of-the-art devices that will help with treating patients before they get to the hospital, according. Jerry Harnish, Rural/Metro regional director.

“Braun (the provider) tends to be a high end builder, and has made a fleet that’s designed for high performance,” Harnish said. “With each new order for units, we have learned what can be done for patient care.”

Harnish said Knox County has a strict vehicle age requirement, causing the need for Rural/Metro to replace some of its fleet. The vehicles can’t be more than six years old or have more than 350,000 miles on them. He knew that seven ambulances would be hitting this mark, which made vital the move to replace them.

“We need a certain number of new ambulances and can’t afford to wait until the end of the year,” Harnish said. “We want to make sure they are on the road by the end of the year.”

Each ambulance is a $130,000 investment with the total for all of the new ambulances coming to around $910,000.

The ambulances are equipped with LUCAS 2, an automated chest compression device that delivers automated, uninterrupted chest compressions at a consistent rate and depth. The portable device will allow EMTs to more thoroughly assist patients before they reach the hospital.

Harnish said he hopes to have the new vehicles out on the road by Dec. 31 at the latest. He added that Rural/Metro plans to bring in 14 more over the course of 2014.
