PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island emergency officials say they're closely monitoring Hurricane Sandy, and are reminding residents to prepare.
The Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency says residents should get ready by clearing gutters, securing outdoor furniture, trimming overgrown tree branches and shrubs and clearing storm drains.
Emergency officials say that while it's not yet known what track the storm will take, it will cause dangerous conditions in the open ocean.
Forecasters say much of the U.S. East Coast has a good chance of getting hit by gale-force winds, flooding, heavy rain and maybe even snow early next week by an unusual hybrid of hurricane and winter storm.
