NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) - A patient at a Niagara Falls hospital survived a 60 foot fall from the roof of the facility.
His family members are well aware that he's lucky to be alive. But, at the same time, they can't help but question the security of the medical center.
Cameron Lampkin questioned, "Who is watching him? How did he get out?"
Lampkin is worried about his younger brother. He shared his concern outside Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, a day after his 20-year-old sibling allegedly jumped from the roof of the facility.
"Right now, he's suffering bad injuries. He's in ICU. He's got a collapsed lung, bleeding in brain. I can't talk to him," said Lampkin.
Lampkin said his mom brought his younger brother to the hospital a week ago, where he was admitted to a behavioral health unit. Supposedly, he had been under a lot of stress, possibly on the verge of breakdown. His family thought, that in a secured area of the hospital, he would be safe, until now.
Lampkin wondered, "How could no one be on patrol to watch him?"
An internal investigation is now underway. Community Relations Vice President Ann Marie Tucker was limited in what she could say, but claims the matter is being taken extremely seriously.
Tucker said, "Oh, it's heartbreaking. The number one concern of every employee here is our patients, and so when something happens, a patient is injured, it's devastating to all of us. Unfortunately, we can't predict everything."
Apparently, the patient pulled a fire alarm, which released all the doors in the hospital. He then made his way to the roof.
"Even if he flipped the alarm, how could no one see that?" said Lampkin.
Unable to talk to his brother, Lampkin wonders if he really did jump, or did he fall? He knows his questions will have to wait until his brother is healthy enough to answer.
Lampkin's brother was transported to ECMC immediately following the jump. Monday night, he remains in ICU, where he's listed in stable condition.
