NORGE, Va. - One person was killed Saturday when an Amtrak train hit a vehicle near Williamsburg, authorities said.
The driver of the vehicle was killed in the accident just before noon.
James City County Fire Department spokesman Billy Apperson said two train passengers were transported to a local hospital for heat exhaustion. None of the 135 passengers were injured in the crash.
Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said the train was en route from Boston to Newport News. The accident occurred at the private Hunts crossing in Norge, which is equipped with stop signs but no gates.
Romero said the train was traveling at 76 miles per hour, close to its maximum speed of 79 mph.
Authorities are not releasing the identity of the driver, who was alone in the vehicle.
Train passengers were being transported by bus to their destinations. Romero said Amtrak was working to find a train to make the northbound trip later in the day because the train involved in the crash was too damaged to make the trip.
