HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) — Hackensack fire officials say an emphysema patient accidentally caused a car explosion when his cigarette ignited gas from a leaking oxygen tank inside the vehicle.
The Record (http://bit.ly/xiuOZH) reports that three people — the man and a city police officer, who were not identified, and Fire Department Lt. Stephen Lindner — were all hurt in Tuesday's explosion. Lindner and the officer apparently escaped serious injury, but details on the man's injuries were not immediately available.
Fire Chief Matt Wagner tells the newspaper that seven oxygen tanks were in the car's back seat, and apparently just one was leaking.
Lindner was among those responding to the initial car fire call, and he was approaching the vehicle with a hose when it exploded.
Wagner said the car's roof landed 50 feet away.
