ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) — Police say emergency crews have rescued a woman and her 21-month-old child from a sport utility vehicle after it had crashed into a central New York pond.
Authorities tell the Ithaca Journal (http://ithacajr.nl/H2Ojhq ) that Ithaca police officers who arrived on the scene Thursday night found that the SUV had crashed through a fence, traveled down an embankment and landed in a pond. The SUV was submerged up to its windows when officers arrived.
Officers stopped a would-be rescuer from using a hammer to break a window, fearing it would flood the SUV. Firefighters then broke through the vehicle's sun roof and brought the woman and child to shore.
They were taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
