GALLATIN, N.Y. (WIVB) - A state police captain is calling a 22-year-old man's rescue a "miracle."
The family of Thomas Wopat-Moreau reported him missing on May 30th, after he left his residence in Dutchess County heading for Columbia County.
On Thursday during an extensive search, police discovered a car overturned in heavy brush, almost 500 feet down an embankment in the Town of Gallatin.
After calls for help, Wopat-Moreau was found 150 feet away from his car, in a swampy area. He crawled there after the accident, but was unable to move further.
Wopat-Moreau was unable to walk due to serious back injuries and was suffering from exposure and dehydration after four and a half days in the woods.
Wopat-Moreau was extracted from the woods and then airlifted to Albany Medical Center where he was reunited with his family.
Captain Scott Brown described the rescue as a miracle. "Most individuals suffering similar injuries and circumstances for that long would not have survived. Thomas definitely has a strong will to live. When found, he was thirsty, tired and grateful to be rescued."
