CHARLESTON, S.C. — An unruly man who told Charleston, S.C., police he knew martial arts spit blood at paramedics while being placed under arrest Tuesday night, authorities said.

Police arrived at the Spring Roll Restaurant, 381 King St., at 9:30 p.m. in response to an altercation between a man and the business' staff, an incident report states.

Jonathan Darling, 35, of Stockton Drive in Mount Pleasant, yelled, "You don't know who you're messing with" and claimed to be a combat ranger while arguing with staff and police, the report states.

Police said Darling smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.

Darling fought off attempts to place him under arrest, and positioned his arms and body in a fighting stance, the report states.

Police forced Darling against a wall and onto the ground to place handcuffs on him, the report states.

Afterward, police noticed a cut above Darling's eyebrow, according to the report.

While being transported to Roper Hospital, paramedics reported that Darling spit blood and saliva at them.

Police charged Darling with throwing bodily fluids by a prisoner, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, according to the report.

He was held at the Charleston County jail.
