SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 27-year-old man has pleaded guilty to automobile homicide and driving under the influence in a Salt Lake City crash that killed a paramedic.
Gabriel Perez-Guiterez appeared Tuesday in 3rd District Court. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors are dropping some charges, including felony leaving the scene of an accident.
Authorities say he was traveling at high speeds the morning of May 22 when he crashed into 31-year-old Jonathan Bowers' vehicle. Bowers died of his injuries about a week later.
Gabriel Perez-Guiterez fled the scene, but was caught later. He faces up to 16 years in prison at sentencing April 27.
Bowers was attending the University of Utah and had worked for Gold Cross Ambulance for six years. His family says he wanted to work for FEMA one day.
