Indiana Medics Rescue Man From Burning Car

Driver was taken by helicopter to St. Joseph Burn Center in Fort Wayne.

LOGANSPORT, Ind. - Authorities say medics had to break out the windows of a smoke-filled car to pull out the 81-year-old driver after it stopped outside a northern Indiana city hospital.

Logansport police say Robert Hunt suffered second- and third-degree burns on his chest, back and head. He was taken by helicopter to St. Joseph Burn Center in Fort Wayne, where he was listed in critical condition.

City fire investigator Ted Franklin tells the Pharos-Tribune that the fire started Saturday in the driver's door of Hunt's 1992 Mercury Sable. An EMS worker saw smoke coming from the car before it stopped near Logansport Memorial Hospital, and medics had to break out the windows because the doors were locked and Hunt was unresponsive.

Franklin said he was trying to determine what caused the fire.
