The IAFC Terrorism and Homeland Security Committee has released its expanded Terrorism Response: A Checklist and Guide for Fire Chiefs and Community Preparedness Leaders, 3rd Edition. This expanded toolkit provides a clear, systematic and comprehensive framework for all emergency responders and community preparedness leaders to better prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from all risks and all hazards incidents.
With the recent anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and a rise in natural disasters across the nation (i.e. Hurricane Irene, Joplin tornado, Memphis floods and Texas wildland fires), first responders are reminded that incidents of this nature require departments to think beyond their own resources and work to build partnerships with other disciplines and agencies that will be essential to effective, efficient response. The Checklist and Guide continues to be a valuable resource for various disciplines including the fire service, emergency management, law enforcement, military, public health, and universities.
This checklist provides detailed steps that departments and communities can adapt to their own needs while strengthening their preparedness and response capabilities. The expanded checklist includes a newly interactive checklist summary that allows departments and communities to save, revisit and reassess readiness at regular intervals (initial, mid-point, 18 month and follow-up assessment). Other additions include the new Presidential Policy Directive 8 (PPD-8), case studies, after-action reports, lessons learned and updated references.
The Checklist and Guide was first released in 2007 as a guide for fire chiefs. Since that time, the document has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of the fire and emergency service and the communities they serve. It remains one of the IAFC’s most frequently requested resources.
