HONOLULU - Honolulu firefighters have rescued two hikers who called for help from a ridge near the "Stairway to Heaven" trail.

The Honolulu Fire Department sent a helicopter after one of the hikers called dispatchers around 10 a.m. Sunday and told them he and a second hiker were stranded on the ridge.

A fire official says the helicopter took the hikers off the ridge about an hour later.

Officials have not released any details about the two hikers, except to say they were both males.

The trail the men were on stretches from Kaneohe District Park to the top of the Koolau Mountain range.
