Georgia Man Dies after Fighting EMT and Paramedic

Paramedic and firefighters were trying to help Kolberg after his pickup crashed

WAYCROSS, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a Valdosta man died after a south Georgia sheriff's deputy briefly shocked him with a stun gun after they say he attacked a paramedic and firefighter after a highway crash.

Ware County Sheriff Randy Royal tells the Florida Times-Union that 55-year-old Otto Kolberg died Wednesday night, shortly after being taken to a hospital in Waycross.

Royal said the paramedic and firefighters were trying to help Kolberg after his pickup crashed into a utility pole on U.S. 84 between Valdosta and Waycross.

Royal said Kolberg became combative, and bit a female EMT on the hand and kicked her in the chest. The sheriff said Kolberg then hit, kicked and bit a paramedic and firefighter who tried to restrain him.

An autopsy was being performed Thursday.
